Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia’s largest national park and is high on the list of the country’s must sees. A series of pristine, aquamarine lakes flow through the kartst mountains via a series of cascading waterfalls, surrounded by lush forest now in autumnal reds, yellows and browns.
Zadar, a coastal city in central Croatia, is best know for its sea organ. Designed by architect Nikola Bašić as part of a project to redesign the new city coast, the waves interact with the organ to create deep, harmonious sounds. Under the white marble steps leading down to the water is a series of polyethylene tubes and a resonating cavity that turns the site into a large musical instrument, played by the wind and the sea. Sitting quietly on the steps, gazing out at the cloudy sunset and enjoying the random melody was a peaceful, magical experience.
